Hourly Commitment - 12 to 18 hours per week (50 weeks per year)
Compensation - $28.00 per hour
Work Type - In Person
Location: Currently in Needham and relocating to Framingham in early 2027.

Plugged In is a nonprofit music program committed to creating an inclusive, loving, and diverse community empowered to change the world. Founded in 2002, we educate musicians of all ages, skill levels, and abilities in a non-competitive environment, and provide band and individual performance opportunities in support of community and charitable causes. Every opportunity we offer is developed through the lens of inclusion, and a growing share of our students have disabilities or other accessibility needs.  We serve approximately 330 students annually in the MetroWest Massachusetts area through band classes, private lessons, summer camps, and community performances. 

JOB SUMMARY
The teacher is the primary point of contact in the delivery of musical instruction in band class and private instruction. The goal of the teacher is to create an environment in which musicians can fully explore music and its power to create positive change.  Teachers convey the importance of and facilitate the creation of safe, ego-free, creative spaces where students support each other in reaching their goals.  They facilitate each student's fulfillment of their potential for technical, social, and personal growth and develop their skills as a performer who appreciates music.  Teachers model the mission and values of the organization when with students.  Teachers are also strongly encouraged to rock on!

RESPONSIBILITIES

Teaching Responsibilities
Teachers work with students from a wide range of skill levels and abilities and provide equal time and support to those students.  Student achievement and growth are primarily dependent on the work and effort of the teacher.  The teacher creates and maintains an educational environment that encourages effective student learning and supports the organization’s mission, programming, and goals.
 

• Teach band classes, private instruction, and other program pieces as assigned by the Program Manager.

• Ensure the opportunity for all students to learn in a supportive environment.

• Create and maintain a positive and orderly learning condition in the music environment.

• Analyze student progress and provide appropriate instruction.

• Execute management/discipline plans ensuring safety at all times.

• Develop a classroom climate that promotes positive learning conditions.

• Work professionally with administrators, staff, parents, and community.

• Participate in other job-related duties and activities related to the position as assigned by the Program Manager.

• Tidy up practice spaces after use.

• Communicate to the Program Manager all damaged equipment and technology issues

• Communicate to the Program Manager any concerns for student wellbeing / safety.

Administrative Responsibilities
When not direct teaching, teachers are responsible for supporting programming through related administrative tasks including but not limited to parent/student communication, scheduling, informational meetings, new student meetings, and band meetings.
 

• Parent/student communications.

• Support the scheduling of band classes, private instruction, and other program pieces.

• Taking and reporting attendance for both band classes and private instruction.

• Student goal setting and reporting.

• Administer pre and post session student surveys.

• Weekly check-ins with the Admin Team.

• Responding to emails and phone calls.

• Gig management and concert planning.

• Classroom inventory and organization.

• Attend teacher meetings and professional development opportunities.

• Miscellaneous tasks as needed from administration.
   

REQUIREMENTS

• Advanced knowledge of one core band instrument (guitar, bass, keys, drums, vocals) and basic teaching knowledge of remaining instruments. Thorough knowledge of traditional and popular music styles.  

• Must hold an undergraduate degree in music from an accredited college or university or a minimum of 2 years demonstrated ensemble teaching experience in a school setting (student teaching applies).

• Works well with others from diverse backgrounds.  Focuses on problem solving, maintaining confidentiality, remaining open to others’ ideas, and contributing to building a positive team spirit.

• Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from students, parents, staff, or members of the community.  Ability to draft simple correspondence and some routine reports.  Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.

• Proficiency in the usage of internet software and email.  Ability to use and service basic office technology (using a printer, replacing printer ink, etc.)

• Ability to appropriately communicate with students, teachers, parents, members of the community and others.  Ability to exercise good judgment and work in a fast paced, hectic environment.

• Priority given to those who speak both English as well as Portuguese and/or Spanish
